Harford, P.C. has recently filed three lawsuits against Harlem Hospital and Massapequa Center Rehabilitation and Nursing for exposure to Legionella bacteria. All three plaintiffs developed Legionnaires’ disease resulting in catastrophic injuries and lengthy hospitalizations.
Harlem Hospital was the site of an extensive investigation by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene that found its cooling tower to match affected clinical specimens. The tower was deemed responsible for eighteen (18) hospitalizations. The facility is owned by the New York Health and Hospitals Corporation.
Massapequa Center Rehabilitation and Nursing is private facility that promotes itself to offer “occupational, physical, speech and respiratory therapies.” Harford, P.C. represents two (2) patients that allege exposure to Legionella bacteria from the hospital’s potable water supply.
All of the plaintiffs allege that they contracted Legionnaires’ disease by breathing droplets (mist or vapor) of water contaminated with Legionella bacteria. Harford, P.C. claims that none of the facilities warned patients about the risk of Legionella and failed to take appropriate steps to treat and prevent the spread of bacteria within their cooling tower and water supply. New York maintains the most stringent requirements in the country for restricting Legionella within cooling towers.
Harford, P.C. also represents clients that developed Legionnaires’ disease from the South Bronx outbreak, the Sugar Hill outbreak in upper Manhattan, Co-Op City, a financial district residential building, and multiple apartment complexes in New Jersey.
