The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (the “DOH”) just announced on June 17, 2022 a match in the Legionella strain found in two patients from the Bronx Highbridge cluster. After an extensive epidemiologic investigation, the DOH found the cooling tower at the building located at 1325 Jerome Avenue as a match.
According to the Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan, “[t]he Department’s investigation was able to identify one cooling tower that had a genetic match with patient specimens, and the cooling tower was ordered to take additional cleaning and disinfection measures.”
There were 30 cases of Legionnaires’ disease associated with the cluster. Twenty-eight people were hospitalized, 24 have been discharged, and two New Yorkers died.
The building at 1325 Jerome Avenue, a newly-constructed 21-story mixed used building, has 101 units for residents, and is located within the Mount Eden section of the Bronx. The building is owned by the Doe Fund, a nonprofit organization. Tenants only started moving into the building a little over a year ago.
