Legionella Outbreak Linked to the Amsterdam Nursing Home in Manhattan

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene recently announced a legionella outbreak found at the Amsterdam Nursing Home located on Amsterdam Avenue and West 112th Street in Morningside Heights.  The outbreak has included four deaths out of eight cases in the west wing of the 409-bed Amsterdam Nursing Home.

According to data obtained by the New York Times, the nursing home has been cited for two cooling tower violations since 2017.  The building is managed by Centers Health Care, a Bronx-based long-term company that operates 50 skilled nursing and rehab facilities throughout the United States.  A spokesman for the building wrongly claims that the building is in compliance with New York regulations.

There are currently eight residents at the Amsterdam Nursing Home who have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease and developed symptoms between late August and early September.  The ages of the nursing home residents range from 69 to 93.

Harford, P.C. currently represents clients that developed Legionnaires’ disease from Harlem Hospital, Massapequa Center Rehabilitation and Nursing, the South Bronx outbreak, the Sugar Hill outbreak in upper Manhattan, Co-Op City, a financial district residential building, and multiple apartment complexes in New Jersey.
