The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (“NYC DOH”) has reported a new legionella outbreak in Carnegie Hill and Yorkville sections of the Upper East Side. While the DOH has not yet identified the source of the outbreak, it is believed to most likely emanate from a cooling tower in the neighborhood.
As of July 6, 2026, there are believed to be at least fourteen (14) confirmed infections with potentially many more to follow. The DOH stated that people who live, work or have recently visited the neighborhood monitor for symptoms and seek immediate medical care if they become ill.
According to the New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin, [i]t’s my expectation that we’ll see more cases. Now why is that? It’s because we just spent the weekend telling the city’s doctors to test for this, the hospitals to test for this, the nurses to test for this disease.”
Legionnaires’ disease causes flu-like symptoms that can include headache, muscle aches, fever, cough, shortness of breath, and confusion. The disease can be treated with antibiotics but can be fatal if left untreated. The people at the highest risk are typically over 50 years-old, suffer from lung issues, and/or have a weakened immune system.
