Legionnaires’ Outbreak Scare Heightens in Upper Manhattan

A cluster of Legionnaires’ diseases cases has increased to 18 within the area between 145th Street and 165th Street in Manhattan. Nine people have been released from the hospital and one person has reportedly died. The City has declined to identify the individual who died, but stated she was older than 50, and had a number of risk factors for Legionnaires’ disease. Another seven individuals remain hospitalized from the outbreak.

Legionnaires’ is a form of pneumonia that is typically contracted by breathing in droplets of water in the air originating from a contaminated source. Health officials have inspected more than 20 water coolers in the area but have not yet to pinpoint the precise location of the outbreak. Several building owners have been ordered to increase their biocide in an effort to kill the bacteria.

Risk factors for Legionnaires’ disease include individuals with a weakened immune system, chronic lung disease, and cigarette smokers. City officials are warning residents of Washington Heights and Hamilton Heights to remain vigilant with identifying symptoms. Someone may have been infected last week and still not be able to identify any symptoms due to the disease’s typical two-week incubation period.

Any adults that live or have visited the area in the last month should seek medical attention immediately if they experience flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
