New York City Health Officials Reveal Source of Legionnaires’ Outbreak in Upper Manhattan

The source of the Legionnaires’ outbreak that sickened 27 people, including one death has been revealed by the New York City Health Department.  After extensive research by the Health Department’s epidemiologists and laboratory, a match was found between the bacteria strain found in six patients and the one within the cooling tower at The Sugar Hill Project, located at 898 St. Nicholas Avenue at West 155th Street.

The Sugar Hill Project was dis-infected on July 13 and no cases have been identified.  Dr. Mary T. Bassett, the New York City Health Commissioner, has declared the cluster of Legionnaires’ disease in lower Washington Heights over.  This cluster was typical as most cases of Legionnaires’ disease can be traced to plumbing systems where conditions are favorable for bacterial growth, including cooling towers, whirlpool spas, humidifiers, and evaporative condensers of large air-conditioning systems.

Harford, P.C. currently represents individuals harmed by infection to Legionella bacteria.  If you or someone you know has been injured by contracting Legionnaires’ disease, please contact Scott A. Harford immediately at Harford, P.C.  You can directly reach him at (212) 390-8983.
